JACK FINE ART

Company History

Jack Fine Art was formed in 2002. I started the company after having previously worked at the old established firm of Polak Gallery in St. James’s. I worked at Polak Gallery with my father for nearly 25 years and my father continues to help me on a consultancy basis.

I hope you will enjoy browsing through these pages. I have changed very little since my days at Polak Gallery in terms of the artists represented. The website includes works by some of my favourite artists of the 19th and 20th Centuries, together with paintings and sculpture by current artists.

Information for Buyers

· Professional Advice, Peace of Mind and Confidence

We carefully select our paintings for their quality, condition, subject and price. Quality and condition are paramount but it is also important to have an understanding of the market. Whilst nobody can guarantee the investment performance of works of art it is important to understand how the subject of any picture must be of broad appeal to an international audience, and in this way we enable our clients to benefit from a sound future market based on our advice.

· Expertise

Stephen Jack has been dealing in 19th and 20th Century paintings since 1976, the third generation in a family of art dealers. He worked together with his father at the Polak Gallery in St. James’s for much of his career, in which time we established good connections with museums, public collections and important institutions.
For a list of major collections and institutions to which we supplied works, as well as details of books where authors sought our assistance please click here.

· Authenticity

We guarantee the authenticity of all paintings purchased from us.

· Personal Service

We pride ourselves in the long term relationships we have developed with many clients over the years. Although we may not always have the picture you want, we are happy to search the market for your requirements and offer you paintings as they become available.
We are happy to visit your home for you to try paintings, without obligation, and discuss aspects of hanging and lighting. For overseas clients we may be able to pack and ship paintings on approval (subject to certain conditions)
We have digital photographs of every item in stock which allows us to send images by e-mail to our clients all over the world. Higher resolution images can be supplied on request to show items in more detail, for example different views of a piece of sculpture, or a painting in its frame. We can also supply transparencies if required.

OLD FORT NIAGARA TO RECEIVE 18th CENTURY PORTRAIT OF
FRENCH & INDIAN WAR GENERAL

“As significant an artifact to the Fort’s French & Indian War period
as its majestic 15 star - 15 stripe United States flag is to the Fort’s War of 1812 history”

YOUNGSTOWN, New York – Old Fort Niagara today announced it soon will be receiving an important historic portrait to add to its vast artifact collection. The 18th Century portrait of General Eyre Massey, 1st Baron Clarina, in auction at Christie’s in London, England, on May 7th was purchased by Stephen Jack of Jack Fine Art, Beckenham, Kent, on behalf of The Baird Foundation, with funds provided by Robert J.A. and Donna H. Irwin and Richard E. & Patricia H. Garman, history enthusiasts and longtime devotees of Old Fort Niagara from Buffalo, New York. The portrait is attributed to Robert Hunter, and came to Christie’s from Castle Glin in Limerick, Ireland.

Massey played a significant role in the history of the Fort during French and Indian War, known as the Seven Years War in England. As Lieutenant Colonel of the 46th Regiment of Foot, Massey was a senior officer at the siege of the French-held Fort Niagara and successfully blocked an assault by the French as they entered a clearing called La Belle Famille. In spite of a painful wound, Massey rallied his troops to stand their ground in the face of the numerically superior French enemy. This victory demoralized Niagara’s French defenders and led directly to the Fort’s surrender the next day, which eventually allowed the British to control the whole Upper Great Lakes and Ohio Valley region.

Following a long and distinguished military career Massey later went on to become MP for Swords, County Dublin, Governor of Limerick and subsequently 1st Baron Clarina.

Surprisingly, there are few recorded portraits of Massey, so Old Fort Niagara is delighted to have secured the portrait at Christie’s of this lieutenant colonel whose actions determined the course of the war.

“This portrait is as significant an artifact to the Fort’s French & Indian War period as its majestic 15 star - 15 stripe United States flag is to the Fort‘s War of 1812 history,” said Robert Emerson, executive director. “On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Old Fort Niagara Association, I express my deep appreciation to The Baird Foundation, Mr. and Mrs. Irwin, and Mr. and Mrs. Garman for their consistent interest in our efforts, and to Mr. Jack for his dedicated service to this project.”

Once the portrait arrives at Fort Niagara, it will augment a special exhibit related to the commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the siege of Fort Niagara during the French & Indian War, which is scheduled to open on July 25. Items for this exhibit, titled “Siege 1759: The Campaign against Niagara in Contemporary Maps and Plans” will come from museums in the United States, Canada and Great Britain. In addition to the Massey portrait, the exhibit will include twelve works on paper ranging in size from 8” x 10” to 32” x 48”, and an inscribed powder horn dated 1760. The exhibit is made possible through a grant from the John R. Oishei Foundation, Buffalo, New York.

Information for Sellers

We are interested in acquiring works by 19th and 20th Century artists as well as some contemporary artists.

Below is a list of artists whose work we handle on a regular basis and would like to acquire. The list is not exhaustive, so if you have object by other artists which have merit and are in excellent condition we would be please to receive details. Artists shown in bold print are those whose work we are particularly keen to see at the moment.

In the first instance we are willing to appraise paintings from photographs or digital images and give an estimate of value. The value will be based on our view of the market along with the recent sales of comparative paintings. The value could then be confirmed on viewing the picture, and we are happy to arrange for the paintings to be shipped to our premises for viewing.

We are happy to sell either on commission; or on an agreed net price basis; or in many cases we may agree an outright sale.
