STEPHEN JACK
Jonathan Knight ARBS

Jonathan Knight was born in 1954. As various members of his family were artists he found himself drawn towards artistic pursuits and discovered he had a talent for sculpting at a very early age. He was largely self-taught and as a young man managed to combine his art with his interest in horses, that formed the subject matter of most of his early work.

Jonathan is an expert horseman and dressage specialist and he demonstrates a remarkable empathy with his subject which is reflected by the quality of his work. He has gained a number of prestigious commissions such as the half life-size statue of Dawn Run for Cheltenham racecourse, and a life-size statue of the stallion Music Boy for Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket. These are in addition to a regular flow of smaller sculptures commissioned by a knowledgeable worldwide clientele.

Polar Bear
In recent years, he has extended his repertoire to encompass other animals, birds and human figures, but whatever the subject, his work is characterised by an uncanny sense of presence. It is almost as if the action is frozen in a tableau, but could easily resume at any moment.

Brown Bear

In addition to his great skill as a sculptor, Jonathan pays great attention to the colour and detail of the surface of the bronze. He uses of subtle patinas to create a tonal quality that he feels complements the piece. These vary from golden and deep browns, through to moss greens and viridian, adding a further dimension to the sculpture.
